FAQ

What is Whateverland about?

Whateverland tells the story of Vincent, a skilled thief who was out of luck when he decided to steal a precious (and very fancy) necklace from an ancient and powerful witch, Beatrice. As you can imagine, she wasn't happy about it, but the witch has a punishment up her sleeve that's just perfect for our unfortunate hero. Beatrice sends him to the parallel world she has created, where the witch traps those she considers her enemies. There, Vincent teams up with a weird guy named Nick and together they are trying to find their way out.

Will they make it?

Well, we're not making any promises here, so you'll have to find that out.

Who made Whateverland?

The game is by Caligari Games, an independent studio based in Moscow.

We are a team of 14 people, passionate about both playing story-based games and making them.

How did you come up with the title for the game?

The title came up almost instantly, as soon as we figured out the setting of the story. We needed a catchy name for the parallel world created by Beatrice, that could also serve as the title for the whole thing. Whateverland seemed like a perfect choice, because the world itself is made out of random stuff and filled with a bunch of weirdos, so the only way to deal with all of this is to make the word "whatever" your motto.

What was the inspiration behind the aesthetic of Whateverland?

In one sentence the aesthetic of Whateverland could be described as "Tim Burton and Samurai Jack walk into a bar".

Initially, we wanted to go for a Burton-esque aesthetic that we all know and love, as it seemed perfect for the setting and the tone of the story. But after seeing a couple of sketches and concepts with our characters, we stepped away from this a little too distinctive visual style and started searching for our own aesthetic. Yet you can still see traces of Burton's visuals here and there in the game, cause it provided a lot of inspiration for the initial world and character designs. When it comes to background design, we were mostly aiming for the expressive simplicity of the "Samurai Jack" visual style.

What engine did you use to make the game?

Whateverland is made with Unity since it’s a very popular and accessible engine.

On which platform will Whateverland be released?

We're not sure yet, but hopefully all of them. The initial release is planned on Steam/GOG/Itch.io for PC, Mac, Linux and Nintendo Switch, but who knows?

When is Whateverland coming out?

No specific release date has been set yet – but it’s scheduled to release in 2020.

And we never miss our deadlines! Almost never. Promise.

Which languages will be available at launch?

Whateverland will have full English voice-over upon release. We're planning to translate all text in the game to multiple languages, such as Russian (duh), French, Spanish, and many others.
